The closing ceremony began with a short montage of scenes collected from the two-week summer school, showing students laughing, learning, singing, and enjoying themselves, which emphasized togetherness and teamwork. During this, the room was filled with the students’ laughter.
The 1st part of the ceremony was awards ceremony. Leaders and teachers awarded the certificates to the most popular posters, the best posters, the excellent group presentations, and volunteers in sequence.

Prof. Feng Chen, on behalf of SJTU congratulated and extended best wishes to the students, faculty and those who had supported the summer school. He addressed that the remarkable achievements stemmed from the last two-week program provided a firm foundation for the ongoing development of the international summer schools in the future.
Prof. Shenmin Zhu conveyed the greetings and congratulations from SMSE. She commented that ISS-AM has been very fruitful. Also the mutual understanding of both international students and Chinese students has been increased, and the academic exchanges deepened. In her address, she mentioned that in the I’Ching, “jiao” means “unity”, meanwhile “tong” means “harmony”. Finally, she welcomed more outstanding students come to SMSE for further study in the future.
Prof. Sebastian V. CANEVAROLO Jr., the lecturer representative from Federal University of São Carlos in Brazil, expressed warm congratulations on the successful hosting of the summer school. He said that the excellent performance of the students left him a very deep impression and he would recommend more Brazilian students to attend the summer program.
At last, the international student’s representative, Angshuman Kapil from The Ohio State University in the United State summarized the insightful learning experience and expressed gratitude to all the students. He said that, in addition to learning professional knowledge, summer school is also a platform for cultural exchanges between Chinese and foreign students, he was deeply attracted by the charm of Chinese culture, and in the future he will strongly recommend SJTU summer school program to his friends and other students.

The “Zhi-Hong” International Summer School of Advanced Materials (ISS-AM) is organized by School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), aiming at promoting the interactive cultural and academic exchange between top-level scholars and students from all over the world. The ISS-AM is named as “Zhi-Hong” not only to commemorate the school founder Professor Zhihong Zhou, but also to inspire the summer school participants since “Zhi-Hong” in Chinese means “being ambitious”.
“Zhi-Hong” ISS-AM is a two-week program with one theme each year. The theme in 2017 is “Advanced Functional Materials” and it was held from July 9th to 22nd. It offered lectures and professional practice of all areas of advanced functional materials and organized student seminars, visits to research laboratories, visits to research facilities and manufacturing companies, culture festival and culture tours in Shanghai. The summer school provided wonderful experience to all of the students.
The third “Zhi-Hong” ISS-AM will be held in next summer and the theme is “Advanced Materials Processing”. Welcome to apply for the 2018 “Zhi-Hong” ISS-AM!
