On the morning of July 8, the 2019 “Zhi-Hong” International Summer School of Advanced Materials (2019 ISS-AM) officially kicked off at Room 121, Chen Ruiqiu Building, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. 2019 ISS-AM is organized by School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU).
Prof. Yaguang WANG, Dean of the Graduate School, Prof. Aidang SHAN, Chair of SMSE, Prof. Tao DENG, Vice Dean of SMSE, Ms. Xiaodan SHEN, Associate Chair of SMSE together with lecturer representatives, Prof. Djordje JANACKOVIC from University of Belgrade, Prof. Hong WANG and Prof. Guanyin YUAN from SMSE of SJTU, and other relevant faculty and staff attended this ceremony. This summer school attracted 23 foreign students and 29 Chinese students from 26 world famous universities in 9 different countries (Germany, Italy, Russia, Brazil, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, India, Serbia and China) gathered in Shanghai Jiao Tong University to exchange ideas. The ceremony was hosted by A/Prof. Ke CHEN, Assistant Dean of SMSE.
Firstly, Prof. Yaguang WANG delivered a speech on behalf of the Graduate School of SJTU. He expressed his warm greetings to all the students. He hoped that everyone could learn academic knowledge, overcome difficulties and challenges, enhance mutual understanding, and become good friends and good partners. Later, he gave a brief introduction of SJTU as well as the international student policy of SJTU.
Then, Prof. Aidang SHAN introduced of SMSE, including the history, research topics and great achievements in recent years. He strongly encouraged everyone to take this chance to enhance the understanding of different countries and cultures.
Afterwards, Prof. Tao DENG stressed that the summer school was a platform for both teachers and students to exchanges ideas, and hoped that all would exchange ideas extensively, learn actively, and make more friends.
As a representative of SJTU international students, Alan Magkoev combined with his own experience of studying and living experience vividly introduced Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and he also proposed tips for everyone to better merge to the life at SJTU.
In the subsequent interactive session, the organizer carefully set up a number of questions for the students to answer, covering different aspects, such as the university profile, college settings, tips for daily life, etc. Those who answered correctly would receive a commemorative gift. The students rushed to answer the questions and frequently pushed the atmosphere of the scene to a climax. The atmosphere of the questions & answer process was active, which enhanced everyone's understanding of SJTU as well as SMSE.
After that, all the students and teachers of this summer school took a group photo in front of Chen Ruiqiu Building, reserving precious memories.
After the opening ceremony, the participants visited the 120-aniversary exhibition of SJTU. The commentators gave a detailed explanation, which made everyone have a deeper understanding of SJTU and deepened the friendship between the team members.
The “Zhi-Hong” ISS-AM was established since 2016 and is held annually. The “Zhi-Hong” ISS-AM offers lectures and professional practice of all areas of advanced materials and organize student seminars, visits to research laboratories and companies, culture festival and culture tours in Shanghai. The “Zhi-Hong” ISS-AM is named after Zhihong Zhou, the founder of SMSE, and “Zhihong” means to be ambitious. Every year, there is a topic for the “Zhi-Hong” ISS-AM. This year’s ISS-AM is the 4th time with the theme of Advanced Metallic Materials. 2019 ISS-AM is a two-week program, from July 7 to July 20. In this summer school, students can communicate with the world-famous scholars; exchange ideas with outstanding students; appreciate different customs and cultures; and also have a taste of the beauty of SJTU and Shanghai City.
